Age Friendly Petaluma & BZP Petaluma: How To Be Your Own Geriatrician

Overview: Geriatricians, specialists in caring for the elderly, are extremely scarce, with only one available for every 10,000 individuals in the country. This alarming deficit poses significant challenges, as many general practitioners lack sufficient knowledge about the aging process and its complexities, resulting in both mismanagement and neglect. It is essential for seniors and their caregivers to learn how to effectively advocate for their health needs during medical consultations.

What To Expect: Attendees will engage in a discussion and Q&A session with Dr. Charlotte Carlson, a geriatrician from Sutter Health located in Santa Rosa. Dr. Carlson will guide participants on how to ask pertinent questions to ensure they receive the appropriate care during their medical visits. She will also address the important question, “What do you expect for someone your age?” to help prepare individuals for honest discussions with healthcare providers.

Dr. Charlotte Carlson, MD, MPH, is a geriatrician trained at UCSF and specializes in internal medicine. She dedicates her career to enhancing the quality of life for individuals with serious illnesses and disabilities. As the founding medical director of Grove by Sutter Health, she leads a progressive primary care initiative for seniors in Sonoma County, CA. Dr. Carlson is widely recognized for her expertise in unifying primary care with essential social and home-care services.
