WAPS Symposium 2025: Shocking Topics in Acute Medicine

The Welsh Acute Physicians' Society (WAPS) is thrilled to announce a face-to-face symposium taking place this year in Cardiff, marking two years since the inaugural gathering at this splendid location. The symposium will feature diverse sessions focused on both clinical and non-clinical aspects of Acute and General Medicine, presented by a multidisciplinary team from Wales and beyond.

Programme Highlights

  • A discussion on the impact of corridor care by Chris Subbe and insights into the evolving digital landscape in the UK by John Welch.
  • John Welch will lead a session on Martha's Rule, with Chris Subbe and Chris Hancock discussing its implementation and the Acute Physical Deterioration Network in Wales.
  • The NICE guidance session will see updates on various topics including adrenal insufficiency and asthma from Welsh acute medicine specialists.
  • Ifan Lewis and Drew Workman will present a clinical case on Cardiogenic Shock, followed by a dialogue about its future in Wales.
  • Jason O'Neill and Trudy Logue will address the management of internal defibrillators at end-of-life scenarios, along with guidance from Inger Nag on cognitive approaches to DCCV.
  • A presentation from members of the All Wales TEP Network will outline the journey of Treatment Escalation Planning in Wales.

Target Audience

  • Medical professionals from all levels and specialties.
  • Physician Associates, Allied Health Professionals, Advanced Clinical Practitioners, and Advanced Nurse Practitioners involved in Acute and General Medicine.
  • Those aspiring to a career in Acute Medicine are also warmly invited.

  • A programme with speaker biographies will soon be accessible via a QR code on attendees' badges.
  • Registration and refreshments will be at the Pyramid Suite Lounge on the ground floor.
  • Smartphone access is required for entry; attendees must be 'scanned in' upon arrival.
  • Presentations will commence at 09:00 in the Amber Lounge on the first floor.
  • Feedback will be appreciated via an online form sent at day's end.

Transportation Options

  • Cycling is possible, with proximity to the Taff trail and a nextbike station.
  • Train services to Cardiff Central and Cardiff Queen Street are nearby.
  • Bus stops in close vicinity, particularly along Cathedral Road.
  • Limited free parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis at Gate 2; paid options exist at the nearby Sophia Gardens car park and along Cathedral Road.
