The Future of Arts Centres - research event

Info

Across the UK and Ireland, arts centres have played a vital role in nurturing creativity and community. Often less recognized than theatres or galleries, these spaces have significantly contributed to artistic development and local economies, especially during challenging times such as the Covid-19 pandemic. Their ability to connect with communities and adapt to crises has underscored their importance in fostering inclusion and cultural diversity. The impact of these centres is evident in the way art is created, shared, and experienced, serving as crucial elements in the cultural fabric of society.

A series of discussions will highlight the stories of how arts centres have become integral to cultural survival and renewal. This initiative focuses on the exploration of challenges faced by the arts sector in the current political, social, and economic climate. This inquiry will be conducted by Dave Moutrey, an Honorary Research Fellow with Creative Manchester, who will analyze the evolution and influence of arts centres on both audiences and artists.

The initial session will feature an examination of funding data from Arts Council England, outlining financial support for these centres and its implications on their operations. Ray Morrison, a research associate, will present their findings, followed by a panel discussion including Gavin Barlow and Dr. Jennifer Cleary, to reflect on insights that could benefit future arts initiatives.

The session will begin at 12:30 PM with complimentary lunch and refreshments, leading into the main event set to start at 1 PM.

This event welcomes staff, students, and the general public, particularly those engaged in research, policy-making, and professionals within the arts sector who are focused on creative economies and funding dynamics related to culture in the UK.
