The fusion of Science and Art highlights the remarkable influence of fungi and the exploration of more-than-human realms.
Tarun Nayar, known as Modern Biology, is a renowned 'mushroom musician' who crafts soundscapes based on the bioelectric changes that occur in plants and mushrooms. He has gathered a group of esteemed mycologists, ecologists, poets, and musicians to honor the kingdoms of flora and fungi, aiming to inspire feelings of hope and resilience.
The audience can look forward to an engaging scientific discussion, alongside poetic and musical performances. The experience will culminate in a live musical journey featuring plant and mushroom sounds, allowing participants to immerse themselves in plant and fungal consciousness and broaden their perception of these interconnected worlds. The event will also feature exceptional audio experiences and stunning projection mapping set in a beautiful historic church.
About the artist:
Modern Biology brings 'plant music' to the audience at large. With a background in biology, Tarun Nayar combines his love for nature and sound in an ambient music project that is immediate, uplifting, and rich in context. He employs modular synthesis, custom-built synthesizers, and other analog tools to improvise with the natural energies of a specific place and moment, harnessing elements such as plant bioelectricity, electromagnetic radiation, and the earth's resonant hum. Having been trained in Indian classical music from a young age, he incorporates the principles of Indian raga to guide his musical selections according to the time of day and the seasons. His performances aim to draw the listener into the present through the interplay of vibration, space, and connection.
With over 100 million views and more than a million followers on social media, Tarun's work has been recognized by major outlets including The Guardian, BBC, Genius, and Times of India. His ambient music has been featured in streaming playlists such as Music for Plants, Deep Listening, and Lava Lamp. Notable past venues include the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles and Art Basel in Miami.
Tarun is deeply committed to conserving natural environments and has pledged a significant portion of the project’s proceeds to support ecological preservation.
