In the heart of Rimini lies a remarkable blend of art and history: the Malatesta Temple. Originally a Franciscan church from the 13th century, it was transformed in the mid-15th century into an extraordinary monument under the direction of Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta, the influential lord of the city, who sought to leave a legacy of his greatness. The interiors were masterfully crafted by Matteo de' Pasti and the facade by Leon Battista Alberti, creating an unparalleled work that symbolizes the ambitions of its patron.
The Temple houses genuine artistic treasures, including Giotto's wooden crucifix, the sculptural group of the “Madonna dell'acqua,” the refined bas-reliefs by Agostino di Duccio, and the famous fresco by Piero della Francesca, which celebrates Sigismondo's figure. Among its marvels is also the painting by Giorgio Vasari, “Saint Francis Receives the Stigmata,” which adds further prestige to this fascinating place.
The Malatesta Temple, unfinished due to conflicts between Malatesta and Pope Pius II Piccolomini, has silently witnessed complex historical events. It suffered devastation during World War II but was carefully reconstructed and restored to its former glory in 1950.
A guided tour will reveal the secrets, curiosities, and stories of one of the most extraordinary monuments of the late Gothic and Italian Renaissance, offering a journey through time that will leave an indelible mark on one's memory.
