During Dansens Dager 2025, Scenehuset presents a work-in-progress sharing of _first layers by Amisha Kumra, an Indian movement artist. With a diverse background in dance, choreography, DJing, acting, modeling, and teaching, Kumra brings a unique perspective to her art. Having studied at the Flow Dance Academy in Paris and Amsterdam University of the Arts, she draws from her experiences in multiple countries, including Brazil, India, and Germany.
_first layers is a 40-minute immersive performance that reflects Kumra’s journey through various cultures in 2023-2024. It blends soundscapes featuring kathak bols and hip-hop rhythms, inviting the audience into a collective experience of sound and movement. The work-in-progress nature of the performance allows attendees to gain insights into Kumra's creative process, culminating in an open discussion and Q&A session.
Kumra's exploration revolves around themes of identity and cultural heritage. Her artistic practice, _peeling the purple onion, delves into the complexities of inner and outer influences on movement and expression. By integrating teachings from Indian philosophy and contemporary dance forms, she aims to enhance bodily awareness and challenge conventional narratives of movement. Through the "onion theory," Kumra encourages conversations about authenticity, ancestral knowledge, and the impact of colonial histories.
