The global Christian movement known as evangelicalism has significantly influenced various societal areas such as politics, business, media, science, and culture. Meanwhile, neo-Calvinism presents a unique faith perspective that is deeply connected yet distinct from evangelicalism.
In May 2025, a diverse group of scholars and students from around the globe will convene in São Paulo, Brazil, to examine the interplay between these two traditions and their respective influences on faith and public life, with a focus on South America.
This conference, held at the Higienópolis campus of Mackenzie Presbyterian University, is being organized in collaboration with eminent scholars from institutions including the University of Edinburgh, Fuller Theological Seminary, and Theological University Utrecht.
Plenary sessions and panel discussions will foster an important dialogue between evangelical and neo-Calvinist views on faith and public engagement, addressing questions such as:
- How have these two traditions historically interacted in global contexts like the Netherlands, Brazil, and South Africa?
- In what ways do the theological attributes and methods of evangelicalism and neo-Calvinism shape their public stances and practices?
- How can one assess the ethical and moral judgments made by both groups in areas such as politics, the arts, economics, and education?
- What potential exists for these two traditions to inform and challenge each other towards a more fruitful future?
