PROGRAM
The concert features a selection of classical pieces, beginning with George Frideric Handel's Flute Sonata in A minor, H WV 374, consisting of four movements: I. Adagio, II. Allegro, III. Adagio, and IV. Allegro. Following this, Peter Benoit's Poème symphonique pour flûte et orchestre, op. 43a will be performed, along with Mathieu-André Reichert's Fantaisie Melancolique.
Joyce Wong will be the flutist, accompanied by Frédéric Lacroix on piano.
After intermission, Georges Hüe's Soir païen from Chansons lointaines will be played, alongside Maurice Ravel's La Flûte enchantée from Shéhérazade. The program also includes W. A. Mozart's “Tiger! Wetze nur die Klauen” from Zaide, K. 344, Vincenzo Bellini's “Eccomi in lieta vesta ... Oh! quante volte ti chiedo” from I Capuletti ed i Montecchi, and Jules Massenet's “Je marche sur tous les chemins … Obéissons quand leur voix appelle” from Manon. Finally, Richard Strauss’s Ophelia Lieder, Op. 67 will be showcased, featuring several selections including "Wie erkenn' ich mein Treulieb" and "Guten Morgen, 's ist Sankt Valentinstag". The last piece will be Kurt Weill's "What Good Would the Moon Be?" from Street Scene.
Ashley Carpenter, a soprano, will lend her voice to these captivating works, accompanied by Maxime Dubé-Malenfant on piano.
BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES
Joyce Wong, flute
Joyce Wong embarked on her musical journey at six with piano lessons, before taking up the flute at ten. After moving to Vancouver at fourteen, she achieved top honors at numerous local music competitions. Joyce has performed as a principal flutist with various orchestras and participated in prestigious music festivals. Upon graduating, she will complete her Masters in Music, focusing on flute performance, having studied under notable musicians throughout her career.
Ashley Carpenter, soprano
Ashley Carpenter is recognized for her enchanting voice and comedic skills. She has performed internationally and is pursuing a Graduate Diploma in Voice Performance in Ottawa. A graduate of Western University, she has portrayed various roles in operas and actively engages in competitions, all the while aspiring to leverage her performances to uplift and connect communities.
