The Ontario Council for International Cooperation (OCIC), in collaboration with Spur Change, is excited to provide nonprofits, charities, social enterprises, and other Ontario SMOs an opportunity to enhance their skills in Project Design and Implementation.

This 2-day in-person training will offer a practical, hands-on approach aimed at enhancing participants’ capabilities in project design and implementation. The training will address fundamental aspects of developing a Project Implementation Plan (PIP) required for projects funded by Global Affairs Canada (GAC):

  • Theory of Change & Logic Model
  • Gender Equality Strategy
  • Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning and Performance Measurement Framework
  • Risk Management
  • Project Governance
  • Work Planning
  • Activity-Based Budget
  • Communication Planning


This training is relevant not only for those with already approved projects based on comprehensive proposals but also for anyone seeking to deepen their understanding and expertise in project design, execution, and management. An intersectional approach is adopted, integrating gender equality and SDGs themes at different project levels. Participants from international, academic, or community backgrounds will gain the essential knowledge and tools to effectively initiate their projects.


Training Objectives:

  • Equip Canadian Small and Medium Organizations (SMOs) within the international cooperation sector with the necessary knowledge and skills for project design and implementation, emphasizing gender equality and intersectional themes.
  • Enhance understanding of how strong project design and comprehensive implementation plans can help achieve project outcomes and learn about their impact.
  • Develop collaborative strategies for project elements with internal teams, local partners, and communities.
  • Offer a collection of resources and templates to aid in project design, implementation, budget management, and monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL).


👐 Training Expectations and Requirements:

  • Attendance for both days of the in-person training is required.
  • The training is scheduled for January 16 from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm and January 17 from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm, 2025, at the Center for Social Innovation (CSI) Spadina, 192 Spadina Ave, Toronto, ON M5T 2C2.
  • Lunch will be provided.


📣 Selection Criteria:

  • Up to 30 spots are available for this training, with a maximum of three participants allowed from each organization to encourage diversity in attendance.
  • Organizations meeting Global Affairs Canada’s criteria as eligible small or medium organizations in the international cooperation sector will be prioritized.
  • Travel and accommodation subsidies are available on a first-come, first-served basis for organizations located in Ontario outside the Greater Toronto Area. Requests for subsidies must be submitted by December 13, 2024.
  • Registration will be monitored continually to confirm attendance based on meeting selection criteria.


Registration Deadline: Participants must register by 5:00 pm EST on January 8, 2025!


About the Facilitator:

Claire Holloway Wadhwani is the Founder and Lead of Small Shop Big Impact (SSBI). She has over 25 years of experience in NGO management, project design, grant writing, partnership building, and impact assessment across various regions, focusing on gender equality, food security, health, and livelihoods. SSBI aims to help non-profits achieve significant impact while managing their budgets effectively.
