Workshop Overview:
This interactive workshop, led by the renowned period rights activist Sila Nighat Shahid, highlights the important yet frequently ignored subject of menstrual health in educational settings. The session consists of two engaging segments. The initial segment will cover key aspects of the menstrual cycle, its impact on daily life for women, and the importance of acknowledging its effects for both learners and instructors. The latter segment will address the obstacles women encounter in obtaining safe, healthy, and stigma-free menstrual care in schools and the ramifications of these challenges on their health and academic performance.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understanding Menstrual Health: Learn how menstruation affects women both physically and mentally, and how it can influence their daily activities and efficiency.
  • Period Poverty & Institutional Policies: Explore the issue of period poverty and the lack of free menstrual products in many educational institutions, which increases stress for female students.
  • Cultural Stigmas: Examine the societal and institutional taboos surrounding menstruation that obstruct women's educational prospects.
  • Strategies for Change: Identify potential approaches—including policies, support frameworks, and actionable measures—that can create supportive environments for menstruation in educational spaces.

About the Facilitator:
Sila Nighat Shahid is an activist from Karachi, focused on menstrual rights and educational initiatives. She advocates for creating period-friendly educational institutions and developing inclusive sexuality education programs for grassroots schools. Participants are encouraged to take part in this insightful opportunity to advance discussions and efforts towards a more inclusive and supportive educational landscape for all.
