Detecting, deterring and dealing with forced labour in agri-businesses

Overview

This workshop focuses on enhancing understanding of responsibilities regarding international laws and market standards related to forced labour within agri-businesses.

The training addresses crucial practices affected by recent legislative changes, including:

  • Worker recruitment and sourcing
  • Employment termination procedures
  • Management of overtime
  • Payments and deductions of wages
  • Accommodations on farms
  • Employment of family members
  • Workers' rights to association

In collaboration with the Wine and Agricultural Ethical Trade Association (WIETA) and the Sustainability Initiative South Africa (SIZA), Stronger Together presents subsidised training titled ‘Detecting, Deterring and Dealing with Forced Labour for Agri-Businesses’ directed at agricultural firms throughout South Africa.

Participants will receive practical toolkits and checklists aimed at ensuring ethical operations, preparing for audits, and demonstrating to retailers and export markets their commitment to combat forced and bonded labour.

By the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Define forced labour and recognize the critical role of responsible businesses in prevention
  • Identify signs of exploitation and appropriate responses
  • Understand the presence of forced labour within the agricultural sector, its associated risks, and the advantages of addressing the issue
  • Implement policies to reduce exploitation risks
  • Confidently take steps to tackle forced labour in their operations and supply chains while utilizing new tools and knowledge acquired.

This workshop is designed for:

  • Senior management in agricultural production and supply
  • Personnel responsible for recruitment, human resources, or worker representation

Session Format:

These workshops are conducted by local facilitators in both Afrikaans and English.

  • Online Format: Participants will engage in four hours of live training divided into two interactive sessions of two hours each, complete with practical activities and Q&A opportunities. Sessions can take place on the same day or over two consecutive mornings, with clear instructions provided post-registration.

Workshop Cost

The participation fee for the workshop is R1045.00 (excluding VAT) per attendee.
