The Calanques National Park is hosting a participatory science program called "The Nights of the Great Horned Owl" from December 9, 2024, to February 28, 2025, aimed at monitoring the population of the Great Horned Owl (bubo bubo). This initiative is being carried out in collaboration with various specialized associations and institutions.
This session is part of this larger program.
✋ The sessions have limited capacities. To allow as many interested individuals as possible to participate, attendees are requested to register for only one listening session. Additionally, if there's any uncertainty about availability, please refrain from booking to enable others to benefit from the program.
📍 🕛Location and Meeting Point: La Panouse - Marseille
The total duration of participation is approximately 2.5 to 3 hours (briefing, access, listening, debriefing). The exact meeting time will be specified soon (around 4 PM or 5 PM depending on the equinox).
The precise location and time will be confirmed by the site coordinator 48 hours or the day before the outing, via a confirmation email (weather dependent) for the listening session.
🚶♀️Access Conditions: The access is challenging, and a good level of walking ability is necessary.

What participation entails:
During one hour, at dusk, participants will listen carefully for the distinctive call of the Great Horned Owl. No prior knowledge or experience is required as individuals will be assisted throughout the program.

Anyone aged 12 and over, capable of walking in a natural setting, can participate. Registration is individual and participants cannot bring companions.
What to bring?
It is recommended to wear warm clothing, bring a headlamp, a thermos of hot beverage, and a pen.
