Join Dr. Bruce Hayward for an enlightening guided walk to explore the fascinating geology of Maungakiekie. Participants will ascend Maungakiekie via the road, walking around the crater rim to reach the summit, which offers breathtaking views of the surrounding volcanic landscape before returning to Huia Lodge. Throughout the journey, Dr. Hayward will share insights on the volcanic eruption and the formation of various geological features.
This walk is tailored for individuals who are new to geology and is suitable for all ages with the ability to navigate paved roads and walkways. However, please note that the path is steep and uneven in certain areas where the walk will venture off the road, making it unsuitable for strollers or wheelchairs. Caregivers must accompany children, and dogs are not allowed.
As the walk takes place outdoors, it is important to wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Participants should also remember to bring sunscreen, a raincoat, and a water bottle. The walk will proceed regardless of weather conditions; however, if hazardous weather arises, it may be cancelled, with notifications sent out on Sunday morning.

About the guide:
Dr. Bruce Hayward is a semi-retired research geologist based in Auckland. He has authored and co-authored 25 publications covering various topics such as New Zealand’s fossils, geology, marine ecology, conservation, and history, including a field guide to Auckland and two books focusing on Auckland’s volcanoes. With a history of leadership as the former President of the Geological Society of New Zealand, Dr. Hayward’s contributions to conservation have earned him accolades, including Fellowship in the Royal Society of NZ and membership in the NZ Order of Merit. He has also conducted over 300 public talks and has led more than 400 field trips across Auckland and beyond.
