CoderDojo offers free programming clubs, known as "Dojo's", where participants learn to code, create websites, and develop apps and games. The Dojo's provide a fun and engaging learning experience, allowing boys and girls to connect with like-minded peers and showcase their projects.
These Dojo's are organized and run by volunteers who serve as coaches with adequate IT knowledge, as well as cooks who handle the practical organization. CoderDojo emphasizes open source and free software, boasting a rapidly growing network of members and volunteers worldwide. The initiative aims to demonstrate that programming is not just for tech enthusiasts. Participants create exciting projects that highlight the fun and potential of technology. All materials are available for free, and new themes, languages, or technologies are introduced based on members' requests.
CoderDojo has one rule: "Above all: be cool!".
Practical Information
Participants aged 8 to 18 can join, provided they can read comfortably. The coaching is individualized based on the participants' needs, and collaboration among peers is encouraged to enhance the learning experience. It's beneficial for parents to attend for the first session, but it's not mandatory for subsequent meetings. Children often enjoy showcasing their creations to their parents at the end of sessions.
Each participant needs to bring a laptop (a Chromebook is acceptable for Scratch; a tablet is suitable for Scratch Junior). Participants should be able to install software independently. Coaches will ensure all required software is installed or will inform participants in advance if anything specific is needed. If a participant lacks a laptop, they should inform CoderDojo, which will attempt to provide a portable computer, with only a limited number available.
Registration & Cancellation
The registration form collects personal information about participants. Occasionally, additional information about a parent or guardian may be requested. Participants must provide an email address and phone number for their parent or guardian during registration. CoderDojo may contact parents or guardians directly if necessary.
Participants are encouraged to keep their registration updated, and if unable to attend, cancellations can be easily made by contacting the organizers directly.
Tracks
Different tracks are available for participants to join. Those with no prior experience should start with Scratch.
