Understanding BPD: A Workshop for Families & Friends (1-day)

This one-day workshop is tailored for family members and friends who support someone diagnosed or suspected to have borderline personality disorder (BPD). It aims to equip attendees with information about BPD and to highlight effective ways to provide support while also emphasizing self-care. Participants will delve into various educational and practical strategies to acquire new skills in a supportive and secure environment with fellow caregivers.

Facilitators:

Rita Brown serves as the Carer Consultant for Spectrum, bringing personal insights from her experience in caring for someone with BPD. She has contributed to several workshops and support groups for families and caregivers at Spectrum and is actively involved as a volunteer and board member of the Australian BPD Foundation.

Jo Veltkamp is a seasoned mental health nurse with a wealth of experience in different roles within both private and public mental health systems. Her primary focus is on assisting individuals with personality disorders and their caregivers. She is currently a Senior Clinician at Spectrum, collaborating closely with both the Spectrum Lived Experience Team and the intake team, while continuing her work with adolescents and adults in public mental health settings.

Who should participate? This workshop is designed for family members and friends of individuals with a (or likely) diagnosis of borderline personality disorder.

Lunch: Light refreshments including a vegetarian option will be provided.

Location: Spectrum is situated at 110 Church Street, on the corner with Tweedie Place. The entrance is at the front of the building, adjacent to the Skoda car dealership.

Public Transport:

  • Tram 78 on Church Street; disembark at Tweedie Pl/Church Street (Stop 63).
  • Tram 109 on Victoria Parade (approximately 5 minutes walking distance to 110 Church Street).
  • Tram 75 on Bridge Rd (around 7 minutes walking distance to 110 Church Street).

Limited 2-hour street parking is present. All-day parking options nearby include:

  • 35 Elizabeth Street, Richmond – 11-minute walk (around $16 for the day).
  • 1 Allowah Terrace, Richmond – 12-minute walk (approximately $15 for the day).
  • Doonside St, Richmond – 14-minute walk (approximately $10 for the day).
  • 679 Victoria St, Abbotsford, Australia – 20-minute walk (around $10 for the day).

Cancellation Policy: If unable to attend, notification should be made as soon as possible. A refund may not be possible if the cancellation is not made within the specified time frame.

COVID-19 Safety Guidelines: Attendees are advised not to attend if they:

  • Exhibit symptoms of COVID-19, such as cough, fever, or difficulty breathing.
  • Have recently been diagnosed with COVID-19 and released from isolation.
  • Are in close contact with someone confirmed to have COVID-19.

Note: This workshop is specifically for those who provide care in a voluntary role for individuals experiencing BPD. It does not cater to:

  • Individuals with lived experience unless they are actively caring for someone with BPD.
  • Professionals and clinicians, as Spectrum offers separate training for them.
