During two weekends in November and December, visitors can explore Francesca Hawker's new installation at Woning Van Wassenhove. This installation continues her research project on eels, which began during her writing residency in January 2024. To create her work, Hawker recorded sounds during weekly visits to pumping stations around Diksmuide, where she accompanied nature conservation scientists from INBO (Institute for Nature and Forest Research) to monitor 'eel ladders'. In the iconic round bedroom of the location, guests can immerse themselves in the sound landscape, while a subtle scent of clove oil, used to calm eels, stimulates the senses and creates a tranquil atmosphere.
Francesca Hawker's writing residency was organized by Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens, Belgium, in collaboration with MORPHO, Antwerp, with support from Axel Vervoordt Gallery & Puilaetco.
The installation is accessible by registration only.
