This online seminar features Dr. Asya Pisarevskaya from the University of Rotterdam, focusing on the use of Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) in urban migration research. It provides an overview of QCA's methodologies, emphasizing the principles of set-theoretic analysis and its unique approach to causality. Dr. Pisarevskaya discusses how QCA can effectively address complex causal relationships, while also identifying potential limitations and challenges within the technique. The discussion includes the adaptability of QCA as a solitary method or in conjunction with statistical and qualitative approaches. Through examples from her recent publications, including the book Cities of Migration 2024 and pertinent articles from 2023 and 2024, she illustrates the beneficial contributions of QCA to understanding urban migration governance and policy formulation. This seminar aims to provide actionable insights into QCA's application for researchers specializing in comparative analysis within migration studies.
Dr. Asya Pisarevskaya serves as an Assistant Professor of Migration and Diversity Governance in the Department of Public Administration and Sociology at Erasmus University Rotterdam. Her academic work examines migration-related diversity and governance methods in European cities. Her comparative research passion sparked during her PhD, focused on labor market integration policies for humanitarian migrants across seven European nations during the 1990-2008 period. Currently, she applies mixed methods to compare urban migration, integration strategies, and anti-discrimination governance both locally and across different countries, highlighted in her recent co-authored book with Peter Scholten, 'Cities of Migration. Understanding the diversity of urban diversities in Europe', published by Springer in 2024.
This initiative is co-organized with the IMISCOE Methodological Approaches and Tools in Migration Research (Meth@Mig), the Research Committee 46 “Migration and Citizenship” of the International Political Science Association (IPSA), and the Polish Sociological Society, Warsaw Department.
This seminar will take place online. Registered participants will receive a link to join via Zoom.
