AW på Goethe: Thomas Bernhard

Info

Thomas Bernhard is regarded as one of the great authors of German-speaking literature. Known for his genius and provocativeness, he often critiques his homeland, Austria. Erik Gavelin provides an introduction to Bernhard's literary work and discusses the recently translated play “Elisabeth II.”

Thomas Bernhard (1931–1989) was a prolific and versatile writer, with most of his texts available in Swedish. In addition to novels, short stories, and essays, he also wrote dramatic works. This year, the Swedish Bernhard Society is publishing his penultimate play – Elisabeth II (1987), translated by Jan Erik Bornlid. The macabre play involves a group of curious individuals waiting to see the queen's procession along Vienna's Ringstraße.

Erik Gavelin is a theater producer who made his debut as an author in 2023 with the novel View over Semmering (Norstedts), which explores the relationship between Thomas Bernhard and Hedwig Stavianicek. Gavelin is a member of the Swedish Thomas Bernhard Society.

The Swedish Thomas Bernhard Society is a non-profit organization based in Malmö. The society's purpose is to promote interest in the author Thomas Bernhard, enhance awareness of his works, and highlight research as well as literary and other artistic production related to Thomas Bernhard's authorship or life.
