EVENT DETAILS
As winter begins to stir, the destination is the mountainous region of Corinthia and the ancient Feneos. Visitors are immersed in vibrant colors and stunning views amidst dense spruce and towering black pine forests, as well as a beautiful oak forest!
This dreamy alpine landscape, often referred to as "Corinthian Little Switzerland," captivates those who visit during the first snowfall.
Feneos, nestled in the "shadow" of Mount Chelmos and Mount Ziria, is located in western Corinthia. Once a city-state of Arcadia, ancient Feneos was one of its largest and most significant cities. Today, the archaeological site reveals ancient walls, the Temple of Asclepius, various building remnants, statues, and inscriptions displayed at the archaeological museum in Mesino. Additionally, visitors can observe the sinkholes that still function today.
Lake Doxa: a man-made mountain lake situated at an altitude of 900 meters in Ancient Feneos, Corinthia. The breathtaking natural scenery is dominated by three towering mountains of Peloponnese that embrace the lake: Ziria (Killini) at 2,374 meters, Chelmos (Aroania mountains) at 2,355 meters, and Dourdouvana at 2,109 meters.
The chapel of Saint Fanourios, located in the center of the lake, is connected to the mainland by a narrow strip of land. It celebrates its name day on August 27 and also on the day of the Epiphany, when the waters of the lake are sanctified. Previously, the Monastery of Saint George stood here but was relocated slightly due to flooding.
The Holy Monastery of Saint George: The monastery is situated at an elevation of 1,500 meters and has a long history, playing a crucial role during the 1821 Revolution. It served as the headquarters of the Friendly Society under the leadership of its abbot Nathaniel, with assistance from other abbots of neighboring monasteries.
A Hiking Adventure
Lake Doxa serves as the starting point for the hiking trip. The route involves both trails and dirt roads, with a mild elevation gain (becoming more challenging toward the end). The hike concludes at the Monastery of Saint George, where visitors will be welcomed with homemade rose preserves. From the wooden balcony, guests can enjoy panoramic views of the lake and the Feneos Valley.
Duration: ~3 hours ~7.6 km Difficulty Level: 1 (moderate), suitable for beginners in good physical condition Elevation gain: 450 m
