About the 2024 Annual Gathering: STORY
In the legal realm, storytelling is everywhere. Lawyers narrate their clients' experiences, while clients share stories about their legal representatives. They also challenge the narratives presented by opposing parties, seeking solutions through understanding differing perspectives, if only briefly.
In both education and practice, stories about underrepresentation, high dropout rates, and various forms of intersectional racism emerge. What if the community could harness their skills to analyze and transform the narratives associated with their identity or the ones they internalize?

About Simone Dalton:
Simone Dalton is a multifaceted creator—an author, teaching artist, playwright, and writing coach. She has over a decade of experience weaving narratives in public relations. Hailing from Trinidad and Tobago, Simone organizes and facilitates Island Scribe writing retreats in the Caribbean, focusing on providing women of colour with the opportunity to rest, reflect, and articulate their stories.
About UJIMA:
Established in 2015, UJIMA is an inclusive mentorship collective for Black femme and nonbinary students and legal professionals. The term “UJIMA” translates to “collective work and responsibility” in Swahili. The group aims to provide mentorship, matchmaking services, and an annual retreat, each themed around empowerment:
UJIMA is dedicated to addressing the specific needs of Black legal professionals. Although non-Black individuals cannot attend the retreat, they may support UJIMA through sponsorship opportunities.
Furthermore, UJIMA emphasizes creating a welcoming environment for non-binary, transgender, and genderfluid individuals within the legal sector. Clothing suggested for the retreat is 'Business Cozy,' encouraging comfortable, casual attire appropriate for an informal gathering while noting the occasion's importance.
