Many individuals perceive yoga primarily as a form of physical exercise aimed at improving one’s body, accompanied by brief meditative moments for relaxation. However, this understanding merely scratches the surface of its deeper significance. How can one navigate the profound emotions or traumas accumulated throughout life?
In ancient yogic philosophy, the human body consists of various layers—physical, mental, and emotional; and numerous practices exist to illuminate these layers of our existence.
Emotions are indispensable and sacred; they act as reservoirs of energy yearning for expression. Rather than presenting obstacles, emotions serve as beacons guiding individuals toward the ultimate bliss in life. The ancient yogis introduced Bhakti Yoga, a form of devotional yoga, to harness this energy and facilitate a return to one's source.
Bhakti embodies a connection with the universe and encompasses the entire emotional spectrum. In Bhakti Yoga, participants lead with their hearts, engaging in song, dance, music, poetry, cooking, and painting, all performed with love as a way to connect with the Divine.
Kirtan, the practice of chanting mantras, stands out as a significant component of Bhakti Yoga (Where Man translates to “Mind” and Tra means “to Control”).
This practice is accessible yet operates profoundly within the heart. Externally, participants repetitively sing simple melodies and a handful of Sanskrit words. However, it encourages letting go of analytical thinking and allows individuals to sing from a place of deep emotional expression. Their voices become channels for whatever emotions they experience. During this process, transformative healing occurs; barriers dissolve, wounds mend, trauma finds release, and feelings of hate and unforgiveness dissipate. Subdued emotions rise to the surface.
Through singing, participants flow into an infinite stream of love from the universe. This leads to a meditative and blissful state, facilitating heart healing and the unveiling of a boundless source of love within.
There is no necessity to comprehend the language of the mantras. Mental speculation or intellectual preparation is unnecessary. The experience is instinctual, stemming from a spiritual realm, and is accessible to anyone without prior qualifications.
